Set up your phone
Your iPhone tells the house when you leave and come home. When everyone's phone has left, the house sets itself to Away. When the first person is back, it goes to Home.
This takes about five minutes, once. You'll make two automations in the Shortcuts app: one for leaving, one for arriving.
You'll need these two things
Web address
Your phone key
Keep the key private. It only works for your phone, and making a new one turns this one off.
First, one iPhone setting
- Open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap System Services.
- Turn on Alerts & Shortcuts Automations. Without it, your phone never tells the house anything.
When you leave
- Open the Shortcuts app and tap Automation at the bottom.
- Tap + (or New Automation), then choose Leave.
- Tap Location, pick your home address, and tap Done.
- Choose Run Immediately and turn on Notify When Run, then tap Next.
- Tap New Blank Automation, then Add Action, and search for Get Contents of URL.
- Tap the blue URL and paste the web address.
- Tap the › arrow to show more. Set Method to POST.
- Under Request Body, choose JSON. Tap Add new field, choose Text. Key: event. Text: leave.
- Tap Add new field again, choose Text. Key: key. Text: paste your phone key.
- Tap Done.
When you arrive
- Make another automation the same way, but choose Arrive in step 2.
- In the event field, type arrive instead of leave.
To check it: the next time you leave or come home, your phone shows a small notice, and your line under "Who's home" on the main page changes.
Away recordings
Clips saved while the house was set to Away. Each one is deleted after 30 days unless you keep it.
